New York, NY – December 1, 2021

Hachette Book Group announced today that Michael Pietsch, the current CEO, will retire from his position. Effective January 1, 2022, David Shelley, the CEO of Hachette UK, will assume the role of CEO for Hachette Book Group.

Reflecting on his time at Hachette Book Group, Pietsch expressed pride in the accomplishments achieved with the collaborative efforts of the entire team. Overcoming challenges and embracing change has been a hallmark of their journey.

Richard Kitson, deputy CEO of Hachette UK, will assume the same role for Hachette Book Group. These announcements come from Hachette Livre, the parent company, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lagardère Group MMB, +1.28%.

Under Pietsch’s leadership, Hachette Book Group has experienced significant expansion, including the acquisition of prominent companies such as Workman Publishing and Hyperion Books. Notable published works during his tenure include “Life” by Keith Richards, “The Goldfinch” by Donna Tartt, and numerous blockbusters by James Patterson.
